  25.                                  OVERVIEW
  26.  
  27. With  the  advent  of MagiCMacø,  the  TOS/GEM  operating  system/GUI  has 
  28. effectively been reborn. More than this, visions of 2001's star child come 
  29. to  mind as you work with this huge improvement - both over  the  original 
  30. TOS/GEM  combination  and the Mac's System and Finder (especially  in  the 
  31. all-important category of SPEED).
  32.  
  33. DynaSTar, Inc. intends to be a leader in this rebirth, and our first salvo 
  34. can be found in the MagiCMacø Keyboard Editor.
  35.  
  36. This simple but elegant utility facilitates the COMPLETE customization  of 
  37. the  MagiCMacø keyboard,  allowing MagiCMacø users to work comfortably  in 
  38. any computing situation. Writing in English, French, and Spanish? Simulta-
  39. neously?  You should be able to manage it easily! Redefine the keys as you 
  40. like them!

  43.                     USING THE MAGICMACø KEYBOAD EDITOR
  44.  
  45. The operation is quite straightforward:
  46.  
  47. 1. Run EDIT_KEY.PRG
  48.  
  49.    This program should run fine with other programs, but it does not use a
  50.    GEM  window  as  we needed ALL the real estate afforded us in a 640X400 
  51.    screen for all the buttons and clickable screen areas.  The only catch:
  52.    you've got to run it (as of Version 1.1) in ST/TT High (monochrome).

  55.    The  first  time you run EDIT_KEY.PRG,  you will have to  identify  the 
  56.    folder you have chosen to contain the keyboard files.  The program will 
  57.    save  this  location for future use in an  info  file,  "EDIT_KEY.INF," 
  58.    which will be placed on root of the drive containing the program file.

  60.    We have successfully run EDIT_KEY.PRG while EASE,  Word Plus,  and GEM-
  61.    View were in memory.
  62.  
  63. 2. Remap  from  scratch,  or (EASIER) load a  keyboard  file, noted by the 
  64.    extension ".KFX". You can also load KEYBOARD.TBL, but keep in mind that
  65.    you may ONLY save files in the form *.KFX.
  66.  
  67. 3. Remap the keys - the HELP button will tell you how, but here, in short:
  68.  
  69.    A. Click on a character in the ASCII table.
  70.    B. Click on the key you wish to remap with this character.
  71.  
  72.    There are THREE distinct key tables you can remap:
  73.       LOWERCASE set
  74.       UPPERCASE set
  75.       CAPSLOCK  set
  76.  
  77.    The screen will reflect which set you are in,  indicated  by the status
  78.    of the CAPSLOCK and SHIFT  keys.  It is obvious!  Just toggle the modes
  79.    and see the key caps change!  You can remap almost every key, including
  80.    the number pad (even a separate PowerBook keypad,  such as the one from
  81.    Kensingtonø).

  83. 4. Before  saving  a  new  keymap,  why not describe it?  Use the "DESCRP" 
  84.    button  to  bring  up  the  Keyboard Description dialog.  This is a 348
  85.    character (6 lines of 58 characters)  mini  text  editor.  Anything you 
  86.    care  to  write to describe the nature of your new keymap will be saved
  87.    in the *.KFX file.  Upon loading any *.KFX file,  you can check any de-
  88.    scription that may have been saved with the file.

  90. 5. To INSTALL a keyboard, load the *.KFX file you wish to use,  and select
  91.    "INSTALL KEYBOARD."  You should keep a copy of the "LOAD_KEY.PRG"  that
  92.    came with MagiCMacø in the folder you plan to use to store  your  *.KFX
  93.    files.

  95.    With "LOAD_KEY.PRG" present,  the  Keyboard Editor will install the new
  96.    keymap  immediately.  If  "LOAD_KEY.PRG"  is NOT present , then  a  new
  97.    "KEYBOARD.TBL"   will   be   saved   to   disk  (renaming  an  existing 
  98.    "KEYBOARD.TBL" to "KEYBOARD.BKP").
